There is a debate of whether you can speed up your metabolism to levels that exceed normal metabolism rates through recreation and sport. Typically, people that compete or exorcise in sport do have higher metabolism rates during the activity, and for about an hour after completing the activity. This results in a small timeframe in which the metabolism is actually increased; yet, it goes back to normal standards.
If you are just looking for sports that incrementally increase your metabolism and create weight-loss or promote muscle gain, then look no further than these two sports: cross-country running and cross-country skiing.
Cross-country running involves running for long distances through all sorts of terrains. The typical training involved in this sport is interval training and distance runs of one hour or longer. This sport involves an increased heart rate, well above your normal heart rate, with minimal rest, and continuous running. It is not only great for speeding up the metabolism of a runner; it is also great for conditioning the body to become healthy.
Cross-country skiing is also another sport that boosts your metabolism through slow, snail-paced walks on what looks like tennis rackets through thick snow-capped mountains. The reason this is a very difficult sport is because of the elevation and the conditions in which you must traverse. It builds up your lung capacity, and brings on lactic acid buildup which makes it difficult to move. But it works on speeding up metabolism at an extremely high rate.
